Remove Red Eye

Hi, I shoot a lot at parties and catch great pictures. I am using canon's A620. The thing is that I can not remove the red eye, and if I use the red-eye flash setting, the see me coming. how can I remove the red-eye. Thanks Jack

Answer

Dear Jack.

The Red-eye effect is a common issue when shooting photos using the flash in compact cameras. The red-eye is actually the image of the blood-rich retina at the back of the eye. In compact cameras the flash is usually very close to the lens, and therefore reflects straight back to the lens, unlike when using an external flash which is more distant to the lens. When you turn on The Red-eye flash setting, your camera actually fires up "pre-flash"before taking the photo, triggering the Iris to contract, then the actual photo is taken. This way the amount of light entering the pupil (and reflecting back from the blood-rich retina) is lowered and the red-eye effect diminishes. Another way to reduces red eye is simply to have your subject not looking straight at the camera. this will prevent the straight angle (flash to back of the eye then straight back to lens) and produce a red eye free image.

With that explained we can concentrate on your case. Your camera is not capable of using en external flash which would be more distant than the in-camera flash, and you prefer to avoid using the red-eye reduction feature. So there's no way to avoid red eye when people look straight at your camera. In that case you can use any editing software that offers Red-eye removal, like Photoshop Elements and easily remove the red from the eyes.

P.S. Are the drinks free in parties held on pirate ships ?...
