Choosing a Tripod (or: My faithful companion)

Carbon Tripod I have an ambivalent relationship with tripods. On one hand, they fall into the must have category, and in many cases they make the difference between a good photo and a bad one, or a photo not taken at all... On the other hand, tripods can be a burden. In the land of f/16, aka kingdom of twilight, aka empire of the darkness, Tripods are equal to a pair of glasses. Who shot the sheriff?

Two years ago I shot an award giving ceremony for some kind of "top 50" event. The participants were all high-tech executives and entrepreneurs who received prizes and appreciation for their achievements. As always I made a backup of the photos and saved it in my archive, cataloged under the event name with some more useful keywords.
